Originally built in 1956 as Central High School, AMS holds deep historical significance as the high school for Black students during segregation. Following the integration of schools in 1969, the building transitioned to Amherst County Junior High School, and later became Amherst Middle School. These roots give our school a unique identity built on perseverance and progress.
Over the years, AMS has evolved to meet the needs of our students and community:
Today, our school serves approximately 375 students, and we take pride in fostering a welcoming environment where each student is supported academically and socially.
At Amherst Middle, learning happens in a community where history, resilience, and relationships shape the student experience. We are proud to serve our students and families with a commitment to education, inclusivity, and growth – both inside and outside the classroom.
