PBL Information February 8-12

During the week of February 8-12, all ACPS students will be working to complete two Project Based Learning (PBL) opportunities in the areas of Humanities and STEM. These PBLs will be downloaded to students’ Chromebooks this week and next, to allow parents an opportunity to review content prior the week of remote instruction. Students may choose which two PBLs are completed from the choices provided. Parents should contact Amherst Middle School if they have questions or concerns.  434-946-0691

 

PBL Information

Boys and Girls Baskteball and Cheerleading Tryouts

Tryouts for boys basketball, girls basketball, and cheerleading will take place this week.  Boys basketball will tryout on January 5, girls basketball will tryout on January 6-7, and cheerleaders will tryout on January 6-7, all from 4-5:30 pm.  No activity buses will be running.  Must have a valid VHSL physical to participate and you must sign a COVID waiver form.  Both of these forms are available on the homepage of this website.  

8th Grade Writing Assessment

Thanks to a waiver from the state, 8th grade students in a semester 1 English course will not be required to take the upcoming Standard of Learning writing test. As a replacement, a division assessment will be downloaded from Canvas onto students’ Chrome-books on November 30th/December 1st (depending on A/B day schedule). Students will sign off on download completion and will have until December 7th to complete the writing assessment at home, which will then be scored by teachers in the division.

ACPS Health Clinics

All students are invited to attend one of our health clinics! ACPS will be providing free hearing screenings and Amherst County Lion's Club will be providing free vision screenings to any student. School Nurses will be available for consultation about any health questions you may have. Also, Central Virginia Health District will be providing flu shots to students and parents who want one. If you are interested in getting a flu shot, please bring identification and insurance information. We hope to see you at one of these events:

Parent Teacher Conferences 10/19/2020 - 10/30/2020

Parent/teacher conferences will look different this year.  We will hold our conferences during a two week period during which a parent/guardian can call the school at 434-946-0691 to schedule a conference with the teacher(s) of your choosing.  Our teachers will have time slots during the regular work week as well as a few time slots after our normal work hours to hold the conferences.  Interim reports went home with students on 10/14/2020 and 10/15/2020.  We hope to see you here during P/T conferences!

FFA Fruit Sale

It is that time of year again!! CITRUS FRUIT SALE!!! Amherst Middle School is selling Navels, Juice Oranges, Pink Grapefruit and Mandarins. $20 for the small box, $25 for the large box. Mandarins only come in a 10lb. box for $20. There is also the option to buy half Navels and half Grapefruits for $25. Please contact Ms. Parr if you would like to order! Proceeds will fund the AgScience department at Amherst Middle School. Ordering closes Oct. 30.  

Sweet Briar College/ACPS Student Assistance Opportunity

Sweet Briar College has worked to provide additional assistance to students and families when completing school work remotely utilizing their pre-service teachers through daily google meets that are supervised by professors at Sweet Briar College.  Please note that this is not traditional tutoring of content, but rather a guidance through a problem solving process.  The flyer, which includes the google meet link and QR code is attached.  Also attached, is a sample of the questions SBC students will utilize to help students navigate homework and/or technical issues.

Sports Conditioning

We will begin sports conditioning rotation the week of 10/12/2020.  On Monday, girls basketball will begin, Tuesday will be boys basketball, Wednesday will be volleyball, and Thursday will be basketball cheer.  We will also begin Archery at a date still to be determined.  If you are interested in participating you will need to have a valid VHSL physical filled out and on file at AMS.  There will be no activity buses running, so all students will need to be picked up at the end of conditioning.  Conditioning will go from 4-5:30 each day.  If you are an ARA student and would like to participa

AMS Fancloth Fundraiser

Our Fancloth Fundraiser has begun and the store will be open for 15 days!  This is a great way to get some awesome Cougar merchandise and support our school.  All ordering will need to be completed online and all items will be shipped directly to you!  This is also a great time to buy presents for your students!  Please consider helping us out by going to the link below:
